Perth to Hedland

Friday 2nd July

Well at last we are off.

We got away in good time and made it to Jibberding Rock 22kms north of Wubin at about 7.00pm.  Glenn and Tricia travelled with us most of the way and on arrival we got a fabulous fire going.  It was freezing so the fire was very much a priority! Set up with the Quantum was a piece of cake and we were settled very quickly.  Kev and Marie arrived about 8.45pm and beer and champagne were the drinks of the night! Cold got the better of us all and bed was 11.00pm.

Saturday 3rd July

We awoke after a very cold night, packed quickly and were away from Jibberding at 6.30am.  The morning was sunny and clear and we made good progress through Paynes Find and stopped for lunch at Meekatharra.  No dramas on the roads with very little traffic until after Meekatharra with lots of road trains and trucks heading north and south.  Progress was without event and we pulled in at Gingianna Pool 15kms south of Newman at about 5.00pm  This place never ceases to amaze us.  It is a magnificent stop over at a billabong surrounded by enormous Ghost Gum trees set in the deep richness of the Pilbara red earth. We frequently use this stop over when heading north on the inland route.  Just beautiful – when tourists remember to take their rubbish with them, but in this case it was left perfectly clean.  To top it off, we were the only campers to use the site for the evening.  Well for most of the time anyway - not long after we arrived a Toyota 4WD with 4 locals came screaming through the camp site sprreading dust and dirt everywhere.  They thought it was a great joke!  We politely told them where to go.  They did!  Setting up camp is so simple with the Quantum.  Can’t sing the praises of it enough.

Marie had prepared a spaghetti bolognaise for tea, which we all enjoyed after the usual nibbles and drinks.  Another lovely fire and evening followed, but we were in bed by 9.30pm

Sunday 4th July

We awoke to a cloudy and slightly wet morning.  We did not experience the coldness of the previous night and took it easy as we packed and departed at 8.30am.  After a nightmare tour through Newman looking for a Caltex (read geographically embarrassed), Glenn and Tricia finally fuelled up and we left Newman about 9.00am.  The rain set in but the landscape we drove through was spectacular.  It always is.  As we headed to Port Hedland, we were stopped to detour a section of road as 2 enormous pieces of metal machinery or infrastructure for a mine site (or something!)  on 2 massive trucks took over the whole road.  The back up going both ways was a picture to behold – so many caravans and road trains.  The north is a truckies world – many of them are arrogant.

We arrived in Hedland at about 3pm and finally caught up with Helen and Steve.  We are camping at their son’s place (Tristan) who kindly accommodated us, turning his house into a caravan park!  We made sure that we caught up on lost time – let’s just say it was a big night!

The rain set in unfortunately with 35mm falling yesterday and overnight.  No fishing unfortunately, but we have plenty of other things to catch up on!  Tomorrow we are heading off again.  We will update things here again when we can!
